Emerging Leaders

The Kiwanis Club of East Lansing honors and celebrates the accomplishments of local middle and high-school students through the Emerging Leader Award. Ideally, the award reinforces youth development of qualities valued by Kiwanis including community service, ethics and leadership.

The award is presented several times each school year to East Lansing students who display leadership in academic and community effort. These students are celebrated for achievements that suggest future success as community leaders.

The organization is hopeful that award recipients will continue to develop a thoughtful approach toward betterment of communities through personal skill development and service to others.

Nominations Welcomed: Instructors and school administrators are encouraged to submit nominations for emerging student leaders throughout the academic year. Nominations may be brief and should address student qualities in the following five areas.

Students selected for recognition, along with two guests of their choosing are invited to a noontime Monday luncheon hosted by the Kiwanis Club of East Lansing at the MSU Union Building. The nominating instructor or school administrator are also guests at the luncheon and play an important role in introducing the student and their family. The emerging leader receives a certificate, a personal monetary award, and is invited to denote a local charity to which the Kiwanis Club of East Lansing will make a donation in the student’s name. The nominating teacher or administrator also receives a monetary contribution for use in promoting continued classroom progress. Emerging Leaders are recognized publicly at the luncheon meeting and through local publications. Teachers and administrators are reminded to include student name and grade level in all nominations. Direct nominations and inquiries to emergingleader@KiwanisofEL.org using a subject of “Kiwanis Emerging Leader”. Questions may be directed to Michael Hudson at 517-884-1903.
